KlappentextWhen her mother became involved in the feminist movement in Australia in the late 1960s, Cassandra Crawford had no idea how radically this would affect her own life, that it would precipitate her parents’ estrangement, and influence not only her own choice of career, but also, indirectly, her choice of a husband.

Basel, June 2012 – Meanwhile happily settled in Basel, Cassandra is visiting the art fair when she suddenly comes face to face with a former friend from her school and university days in Melbourne. This encounter with Diana Farmer, now the wife of a successful New York gallery owner, awakens memories Cassandra had consistently tried to suppress, for the weeks they had spent travelling together in Greece after completing their respective degrees had marked her for life. With her husband away on a business trip, and no one she knows well enough to confide in, she realises that she alone can come to terms with the events of her past.

Entertaining and thought-provoking, Ghosts from the Past is a novel about art and society, about history and world politics, about personal relationships and the power of memories. Taking the reader on a journey of discovery, it oscillates between those pleasant summer days in Basel and Cassandra’s reminiscences as she examines the long sequence of events that had taken her away from her native country and had ultimately brought her to the city on the banks of the Rhine.
